I'm Ellen Maidman-Tanner

My body of work reflects the results of trips to Iceland and hikes around DC, MD, and VA, pre-, during, and post-Covid lockdown. My landscape work was originally inspired by the paintings of Johannes Kjarval, Iceland's most famous landscape artist. I have done many works based on my photographs of the austere vistas of this island nation.

During Covid, without the ability to go back to Iceland, I refocused my efforts on regional parklands where I hiked every weekend with my husband and our two dogs, as well as other stateside destinations. To see these regions in comparison is to recognize the tremendous beauty and power of nature in vastly different ecologies. Many, like me, discovered or rediscovered the beauty and solace of nature during one of the most challenging periods of time many of us have ever experienced.

Through my work, I seek to stir a reconsideration of the unique bounty of our planet and how it can enhance our lives. These paintings are not intended to be hyperrealist in nature, but rather, through a more painterly approach, capture the dynamism of a scene, the main impression of it. As one collector noted recently, “...as good as smart phone cameras have gotten, they can’t see as well as the eye…That’s on reason I love oil paintings. They can be, as in your hands, better than the way the human eye sees the same scene.” To make nature memorable, precious, and worthy of protection is very much a part of my artistic effort.
